In a nutshell

Classroom support in schools is vital in helping children reach their full potential – and if working in a support role appeals to you, this course will give you the knowledge you need.

This qualification provides learners with an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school and college environments. It covers all aspects of specialist support including: planning; delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher; bilingual support; special needs support; personal development and reflective practice.

You’ll be expected to gain practical experience in working in roles that support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or ALN schools, as well as colleges for at least one day per week, as an employee or volunteer. If you are studying part time then it’s important you arrange your placement before enrolling.

This course is for you if...

…you want to work with children or young adults in a classroom situation

…you want to be a classroom assistant or learning and support assistant

What will I be doing?

The course recognises the essential support work carried out in schools and colleges, and is designed to help progression and transfer across the children's workforce within schools and colleges. You will complete 16 mandatory units throughout the year, 7 units knowledge only and 9 units a combination of knowledge and practice. Some will be assessed in your school/college placement and for most units you will produce written assignments.

Each unit is assessed separately through a range of assessment methods.

What is expected of me?

There are no formal entry requirements, but CACHE recommends that to cope with the demands of the qualification you should have 5 GCSEs at grade C or equivalent or Level 1 Care Vocational Qualification.

Full commitment to attendance is required. Respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation are the essential qualities we expect to see in all our learners.
