This course is for you if...
... You want to work with children and young people
... You want to take further qualifications in a related discipline
... You want to build on existing knowledge and skills in childcare.
What will I be doing?
Throughout this course, you’ll build the knowledge and skills needed for working with children and young people from birth to 19 years of age. It covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas, preparing you for work in children's settings, including the early years and social care.
The course is a combination of theory and practice. You'll spend three days per week in college developing the knowledge and theoretical elements of the qualification, and two days per week in a work placement (plus block placements where required) gaining hands-on experience working with children and young people.
The course will develop subject knowledge and you'll be assessed on various competencies of the Theory and Practice. A large part of the assessment takes place in your work placement and end of year exam.
Upon completion of the course, you’ll gain the following qualifications:
- Level 2 Children's Care, Play, Learning and Development - WJEC/City & Guilds
- Level 2 Core
- Level 2 Theory and Practice
- Maths and English
You'll also achieve other relevant qualifications to enhance your skill set such as:

What is expected of me?
You’ll be expected to commit to 5 days of study each week, which includes both the teaching sessions covering the knowledge element of the qualification in college, as well as work placement days/blocks covering the competency element of the qualification.
Full commitment to attendance is required, as is respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject, self-motivation and a passion for the care/ childcare industry.
You’ll be continually assessed throughout the course and there is an expectation that you’ll continue your studies and coursework/work placement during your own time.
What comes next?
