In a nutshell

Welsh as a second language is an enjoyable A Level which has been designed to encourage learners to study this language with interest, enjoyment and enthusiasm. Studying Welsh will greatly enhance your curriculum vitae and make you more employable!

This course is for you if...

... You want to improve your employability prospects in Wales

... You want to add another language to your skill set

... you want to study this language to complement any of the A level pathways

... You want to be able to understand and speak Welsh.

What will I be doing?

At the beginning of the course, we go back to basics and learn each tense from scratch in order to eliminate errors which can cost marks at A Level.

There’s a lot of variety in the course, from studying Welsh films, Welsh history and culture, poetry and short stories, to social media and the Welsh language in daily life.

At AS Level - there are three modules:

  • CA1 - an oral exam in a group of three, discussing a Welsh film, 'Patagonia' and other films and television programmes.
  • CA2 - coursework based on Welsh people past and current who’ve made an impact on Welsh life and the Welsh language.
  • CA3 - a written paper which includes correcting common grammatical errors, changing a short paragraph from one tense to another or from the first person to the third, writing a Welsh letter in response to a job advertisement, appreciating one of the five poems studied during the year.

At A Level - the second-year - your course will consist of another three modules:

  • CA4 - an oral exam in a group of three discussing a modern Welsh play studied during the year in class.
  • CA5 - a written paper in which candidates will discuss the Welsh language and its use in everyday life – in politics, education, the workplace and the media. This will be a continuation of the work done for the coursework in the AS course. Read an English article and summarise it in Welsh.
  • CA6 – another written paper in which candidates include grammar exercises based on responding to an email or correcting another person 's work; analysing the content and style of one of the four short stories studied in class; discussing a theme in the story which can also be found in other work studied over the two years.

Upon completion of this course, you’ll gain qualifications in:

  • AS Level Welsh/Cymraeg
  • A Level Welsh/Cymraeg
