Do you love learning and speaking Spanish?

Our A Level Spanish course naturally builds upon your Spanish oral, listening, reading and writing skills acquired at GCSE level, and develops them so that you attain a good knowledge of the Spanish language and culture.

What will I be doing?

During your Spanish A Level course, you'll read authentic materials taken from texts and the internet and listen to clips of native speakers to develop your skills.

There's also an important emphasis on oral-work and you’ll be required to attend conversation classes with the Spanish Assistant.

AS Level:

All language work for AS Level will be based on the following themes, as well as studying the film 'Volver':

  • Theme 1: Being a young person in Spanish – speaking society
  • Theme 2: Understanding the Spanish – speaking world

A Level:

You’ll examine the following themes at A2 Level:

  • Theme 3: Diversity and difference
  • Theme 4: The two Spains: 1936 onwards

A2 students will also study literature and complete an independent research project.

You’ll be assessed via:

  • AS Unit 1 – Oral examination (12-15 minutes), 2 tasks based on stimulus
  • AS Unit 2 – Listening, reading and writing (2 hours and 30 minutes)
  • Advanced Level (60% of the qualification)
  • A2 Unit 3 – Oral examination (12 minutes), independent research project with a presentation and discussion
  • A2 Unit 4 – Listening, reading and translation (1 hour and 45 minutes)
  • A2 Unit 5 – Critical and analytical response in writing (closed-book) (1 hour and 30 minutes)

What is expected of me?

To enter this course, you’ll need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including English/Welsh First Language, Maths/Maths Numeracy, and Grade B in Spanish.

Full commitment to attendance is required, as is respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation. You’ll be continually assessed and there’s an expectation that you’ll continue your studies and coursework during your own time.

What comes next?

Following completion of your Spanish A Level, you'll be able to go into the workplace in a variety of roles, or you can pursue further study at university across a range of higher education courses in Spanish.
